Update: Paving activities on Alderman Road between McCormick Road and Stadium Road are beginning August 12 and will be complete by Tuesday, August 17th. Pavement striping will take place on August 19th and 20th. Flagmen will reduce traffic to one lane to maintain a safe perimeter during these procedures.

Construction Alert: The underground utility work currently underway in 11th Street will extend to a section of Lee Street beginning at 8:00pm on Sunday night, July 18th. The work will be managed from 8:00pm to 6:00am each night with an estimated completion date of Friday, August 6th. During this time, traffic flow will be reduced to one lane in the area of the intersection of Lee Street and 11th Street. The contractor will have several flaggers at strategic locations to manage traffic flow each night that work is underway in Lee Street. The street will reopen each morning at 6:00am for normal traffic patterns. Pedestrian access will be maintained while the work is underway in this section of Lee Street. If it is necessary for you to travel by car or foot in this area, please exercise caution. Your patience and understanding of any inconvenience is appreciated. A new sanitary sewer line will be connected to an existing manhole just south of the sidewalk. At the same time, repairs to the manhole must be made. The new sanitary sewer line extends from Garrett Hall beneath the sidewalk and the steam tunnel that runs beneath the sidewalk. It is not safe for the public to walk next to the open manhole and construction equipment while work is in progress.
The pedestrial sidewalk in front of Garrett Hall will be blocked by construction activity from 7:00am Tuesday, July 20 to 5:00pm on Wdnesday, July 21. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured around the site along the Amphitheater’s upper sidewalk, using the steps in front of Garrett and Minor Halls. Medium Temperature Hot Water Project - Phase 2
The Medium Temperature Hot Water (MTHW) Phase 2 project will begin on Monday, May 24th, and it is a continuation of last summer’s project to upgrade MTHW piping along McCormick Road. Both projects were designed to increase the central MTHW system’s capacity to support future buildings in West Grounds, especially along Alderman Road and Whitehead Road.
Work includes installing a new utility tunnel along Cabell Drive and down the grassy bank towards Emmet St, where the new tunnel will connect with an existing tunnel. It involves replace piping in an existing tunnel that runs under Engineer’s Way and a tunnel that crosses under Emmet St and runs along the east and north sides of Thornton Hall. Work also includes directionally drilling a new domestic water pipe under Emmet St.
Excavation for the new tunnel along Cabell Drive will impact the metered parking spaces along Cabell Drive, but the parking lots behind Clark Hall, Bryant Hall, and near Cabell Halls will remain accessible. Although no excavation is required in Emmet St, traffic may be impacted by occasional construction traffic.
The contractor will excavate for tunnel access in a parking lot along Whitehead Road, which will impact some parking spaces, but it should not impact traffic on George Welsh Way. Tunnel access locations will also be excavated in Engineer’s Way near the Materials Science building, in front of the northwest corner of Thornton Hall, and along the east side of Thornton Hall. Although safe pedestrian traffic will be maintained around excavation areas, pedestrians should use caution around these excavation areas.
The domestic water line will be directionally drilled under Emmet St, and its installation will require excavation in front of Thornton Hall and in McCormick Road. That work will occur later this summer, and details will be provided in future Construction Alerts.
Please be advised that this work is weather dependent and subject to change with inclement weather conditions. Future Construction Alerts will provide progress updates and notify you of any required changes in schedule.

Pavilion X Construction
Dates: December 23 - December 31, 2009
Construction Alert (11/17/2009): A crane will be brought in to construct and install the ten foot tall parapet wall as part of the Pavilion X restoration project. A forklift will be delivered to the L8 parking lot on Wednesday, December 23. The crane will be arriving on site Sunday, December 27th. In order to ensure no damage to any vehicles during this construction process, parking will be prohibited along the driveway from Hospital Drive up to the east Range Road. The parking lot L8 between Pavilions X and VIII will be closed to vehicles for the crane.
The parapet sections will be unloaded from a tractor trailer at the head of Hospital Drive on Monday morning, December 28th. There will be momentary traffic delays from time to time during this process. Please follow directions given by the flagmen on site.
For other residents and occupants of the East Lawn and East Range, vehicular access may be limited from time to time along the East Range Road as the crane and parapet sections are taken to the site.

Parking will be unavailable in the Colonnade Alley parking court (L2 lot) for the duration of the project. The alley will be open for deliveries to the job site, the Colonnade Club, trash and recycling truck access to the West Lawn Garage, and for construction dumpster delivery and removal. Delivery trucks are encouraged to back up the alley, as turn-around space will be limited.

Construction of the new ITE and CAS buildings along Whitehead Road continues. This project is currently not scheduled to detour UTS route service along Stadium Road or Whitehead Road. As a reminder, the reconfiguration of the T4 and E3 lots is still in effect. Please obey all posted signs at the entrance and within the parking lots.
Construction Alert (8/4/2010): Please be advised there will be underground utility work which will require single lane traffic on Whitehead Road. The work is scheduled to occur between normal business hours on August 5-8 and August 14-15. Single-lane traffic will be controlled via flagmen during work hours. Two-way traffic will resume during non-business hours.
Please be advised this work is weather dependent, and is subject to change as a result of inclement weather conditions. Future Construction Alerts will keep you updated with the progress of the work and/or required changes in schedule. |
